    Is this your DVD/CD drive?

If so look in your Device Manager:

Right click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager.

Click the + next to DVD/CD-ROM drives

Right click on your drive and then Uninstall.

Reboot the computer and see if it works now.

^ when i restarted my computer without doing that, the d: drive appeared again but the BSOD happened again.
it seems as though my computer is fine when the d:drive is inactive but when it's not, the BSOD happens. do you know how i can make it so when my d: drive is active, my computer will work?

Check your Event Viewer via Administrative Tools.

Open the System as well as Application tabs and look for red X errors that coincide with your problem. Details here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427

Also if your blue screen is showing a memory dump do the following:

Go to start | search (type in) .dmp
Note the location of your .dmp files.
If no .dmp files check for minidump.
Remember this location and the path that leads to it.

    Then:

    1) Download and install the

    Debugging Tools from Microsoft

All you need do is download and install this. Make no attempt to start or run it.

    2) Download and install this

    debugwiz

This is a DOS based batch file that will command the above Microsoft Tools.

    3) Open the Wiz & Browse to, or paste in the path to, your .dmp file.

    4) After the Wiz creates a Text document attach it back to this thread.

when the BSOD appears, the error message is 'Error Message: STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER (Q293078)'

You need to update the driver that controls communication with your D:\ drive.

What is the D:\ drive on your PC? A CD or DVD drive? An external hard disk? A USB flash drive?

Does it connect to a USB port on your PC or into a card slot in the side (if it is a laptop) ?

Your answers to those questions (as asked by Jephree previously) may affect the advice that we give you.

the d:/ drive is a cd/dvd drive which is internal.

If it's an internal drive in a PC, then it would be fairly inexplicable that you would see the 'Safely remove hardware' icon so am I right to assume that it is a removable internal drive in a laptop?

If so, try switching the laptop off, removing the CD/DVD drive and checking the connectors. Do they look distorted, overheated or otherwise damaged? Clean them with an alcohol-based solution if you can and then, once completely dry, fit the drive back into the laptop, ensuring that it clicks into place very positively. See if the problem occurs again.

Incidentally, the STOP error that you gave is most commonly associated with graphics or sound issues. Do you get your problems when you are doing something in particular, e.g. listening to a music CD?

^ i don't think that i can remove it physically, there is no hatch or anything that would allow me to open it up.

and no, i can play music and dvds easily
