need a quickie..........
hello,
question answered........that is
going to do a complete system restore on windows xp......
trying to do a backup copy of files to cd.........
error comes up saying several file name more than 106 characters can not save.......
I have gone back and shortened ever file I could find........
does not say which files they are and if I understand it right these files will not be copied to cd.......
tried using 'cd writing wizard's & factory installed sonic record.....
previous computer had sonic program which gave option to change rules to allow ........
question is.......how do I find out what files are to long and/or change rules to allow coping even if cuts name short........
have compaq presario with cd writer .......windows xp...... factory loaded programs only.........
thank you for any help....

Get some note paper and a pencil, rename all the files that are too long for the writer give them 5 number names such as 00001 and and on note paper write down 00001 and it's original name.

that is the problem.........
can not find out which files they are............
message reads....
warning
the following files could not be recorded to your disc.do you want to continue.... yes no
under 'file' column
c:\documents and settings\compaq_ow... (end of column)
no more name after the three dots.......
under the 'error' column
name too long (106 characters maximum)
there are no opitions to get more info.......

It's probably not just the "filenames" that are too long. It's more than likely a series of sub-folders that are taking up so many characters. C:\documents and settings\compaq_owner\.... is about 35 characters. It wouldn't take that many more folders beyond that to reach 106 characters. Ya get?
You need to be a bit more selective on what you want to backup. Instead of the whole C:\documents and settings folder (which is several gigs and more) you should maybe just save the My Documents folder or specific folders.
What do you mean "a complete system restore" ? are you preparing for a major disaster and would want to 'restore' your computer back to the way it was when you last backed up? In that case you would use Norton Ghost which will make a complete image of your hard drive in it's current state. Of course you can't store that on a CD. To do this properly you need a secondary computer with a large hard drive to write the image to. And the same to write the image back to the crashed computer's hard drive.

hello,
thank you for reply........
have factory installed windows xp.........
did full restore three weeks ago.......not just programs...complete restore with format......totally jammed up in three weeks.........
just completed another restore ..........
figured out what files had to be shortened.........
was using factory installed sonic record......
tried to copy files to cd and would get error message box......
could not do anything in that box........said 'no' to complete........
in the sonic main page where the files are listed I clicked on each file and opened......files names were there but not complete......
so I stretched the column and sure enough the full name appeared.........
wrote names done........
removed file from sonic .......
shortened file names......
reloaded file and was able to make up backup cd..................
thank you.............
