    Soundcard help

Hello. I want to buy a new soundcard for recording, which one is best?

Any sound card with a Line In (as well as a Mic In) jack should do the trick. It's really the software you get with it (or download) that makes a difference. I have a home recording studio (I'm a musician, guitarist) and I use a Creative Sound Blaster Live! card (PCI) and it works just fine. I just use the basic software that came with it and record .Wav files. I then use third party software to make MP3 files of the tracks. (Wav files are quite large as opposed to MP3.) I just run the output of my mixing console to the Line In.

I didn't mean to suggest that "ABC Sound Card Tin" is the same as "Super-Duper Ultimate Gold/Platinum/Titanium Sound Card" and would be equal in quality.

The main jist of my reply meant any decent-to-good quality sound card with a Line In jack will do. ie; Don't buy a card in the "Budget Bargain Basement" store for $2.99. You'll have to spend a bit, but spending $500.00 just isn't necessary.

"... make midi drums sound more real..."

Again, a sound card of decent quality will have the electronics built into the card for good sound. The source has to do with it as well. If it's a good instrument what comes across will be good. (I use a Yamaha PSS-595 (mini) keyboard to program my percussion, and I feed this output into one of my mixers.) If yours (instrument) is lacking, a pre-amp on the instrument output, on the way to the mixer (or computer), can make a difference as well. Just be very careful of your line levels. If you "punch it" too hard, you could blow out the sound card.

If it's software you use for drums, then the output will be as good as the software. There's decent, good, and professional recording studio grades.
