    Another thought on Auto-Updates

    Hello everyone

I have had second thoughts on the auto-update
deal. I have now set up my machinery to 'let me know,' when updates are available, but do not install until I ask !

May I ask, where will Winxp store these downloaded files please?

    regards

If you use the option, "Download updates for me, but
let me choose when to install them," then Automatic
Updates downloads them to the following directory:
    %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download

What do you hope to find from these files? I doubt that there is anything readable in them.

If you want a description of the particular downloads then open Windows Update.

You can also view all downloads from the Microsoft site:

Thank you Jephree. I do not hope to find anything from the files. However, being a cautious type, I can decide whether to install them or ditch them.

I really do dislike having stuff heaved into my computer willy-nilly, even MS stuff just may have something untoward latched on to it?

Microsoft is now in the regular habit of putting out updates and patches on the second Tuesday of every month. Today for example.

So you could turn off Auto Updates all together and just check the above site or go to Windows Update on the second Tuesday.

Thank you Jephree, I might well do that.

By the bye, my wife uses XP Pro too but even with 'updates' turned off the 'balloon' still appears annoyingly in the Start bar? Any ideas please?

    regards

    Disable "Automatic Updates" in services.msc.
