    choppy sound

    hello all,
ive been having this problem for about a year now. i almost always have music playing while im on the computer. the problem is that the music will cut in and out. it still plays, but its like its playing in slow motion, but very choppy. this will happen when i open any other program on the computer, and it even does it if im not even touching the computer.

also, ive noticed that when this problem is occurring, everything else on the computer runs slower (games, Internet explorer, anything)

ive checked for viruses, the whole 9 yards, and i have found nothing

if i do a system restore, this resolves the problem for about 5 hours (give or take) and the problem is right back again.

its a dell dimensions desktop 2400 if that matters haha

    thank you for your time
    kevin

How much RAM do you have? How much free hard drive space?

You might want to adjust your Page File:

ive got 512MB, 43.1GB used and 27.8GB free

im trying the page file thing as we type but im a little confused. i read all of the article and i got to the part when i am about to shift the page file size. it says that if you multiply your RAM by 1.5, that is the recommended amount of page file that the computer has set...but what should i set mine to?

    thanks again

I generally use the System Manage Size option.

If that doesn't help or if it is already set that way then make it larger.

    Your's should be over 768MB.

Also for the future if you just edit your previous post there is no way that anyone knows you've added more information.

You might try reloading the audio drivers. Can't hurt:

ok a couple things ive had some question on....

first, in the page file thing. when i go into change the virtual memory, it gives me an initial size and a maximum size. im confused on what to make bigger
the initial size is at 768 and the max is at 1536

another thing is with the audio drivers. there are three to choose from on the dell website....which on is for me??!

id just like to say that i really appreciate all this help. if you cant tell, im rather computer illiterate when it comes to this stuff and i can use all the help i can get...so thanks!

You choose the driver corresponding to your motherboard make/model.

The memory allocated should start at your RAM total ideally and end wherever you want. Maybe double the initial figure.

    Kevin,

We can trace your chipset > southbridge if you want or you can try each driver. They are all for your computer model but depend on the specific southbridge.

You can try one at a time to see which one works (one of them will). No harm in trying each one. If one is wrong it will tell you so.

If you want to ID your southbridge you can use this tool:

    http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

As a test for your problem I would set the Page File very high but your current settings should be fine as they are 100% > 200% of your total RAM.
