I have a dell dimension 8200
today i was playing starcrast minding my own business when my computer crashed and i was forced to turn it off. now my cd rom drive cannot read any d i put into it.


LITE-ON LTR 24102M is my drive i think

Go to the Device Manager and click the + next to DVD/CD-ROM drives

Then right click the drive and choose Uninstall

Then reboot and XP should reload the drivers.

Device Manager = right click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager

tried that a few times without success. could it be possible that its physicaly broken? it is 5 years old

Did it read correctly before this crash?


If so I doubt very much its physically impaired all of a sudden.

Try inserting a disk. If it is not read try opening the tray then closing again.

Try this a few times looking for a read in between. Open/close. Open/close. etc.

Also if you have a can of air blow some air in the drive.

Also you might want to try a lens cleaner.
