What exactly happens? Does the computer power off? Does it reboot? Does it Blue Screen? Is there an error message?

Is this a new problem? Any new hardware or software?

well for no reason it will either reboot or just switch off on me, i thought it was a problem related to software but it does it even when no programs are running and just explorer is open, not sure on blue screen as that isnt on, no error messages, fairly recent problem but am sure that no new hardware or software has been added, other than a new ram stick but problem pre-existed

First off I would run the manufacturer's diagnostic on your hard drive.

If you do not know the manufacturer look in the Device Manager under Disk drives.

Device Manager = right click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager

The scan on this site is Out of Order

If you click the + next to Disk drives you see what you posted?
