hi, there are many programs that will partition a hard drive for you, some preserve data and some dont.. here is a google search: http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=par...en-US:official
alternativley, when setting up XP (performing a clean install) you have the option to partition a drive (when chosing which drive to install windows onto)

i used the Norton System Partitioner if i don't remember incorrectly. pretty decent software

GParted Live CD is a good FREE partition tool:

Partitioning: adding/deleting; re-sizing can be done around your data.
Of course you don't want to delete a partition that you have needed data on.
Partitioning basically just divides a hard drive into separate blocks or partitions.
Formatting is the process of setting up a file system and or over-writing a partition.
What is your purpose in partitioning?

well, i'm using Disk Director partitioning utility.
I use partitions to organize my PC.
I've 3 partitions :
1) OS + programs files
2) my Documents (music videos, etc)
3) Backup - in order to feel save.
