    Missing IP address

    Before installing McAfee internet security suite I removed adaware and avast virus scan. Now that it is installed I cannot access internet - it says the IP address needs to be renwed.

    Any ideas as to what I can do now? The broadband wifi connection is working fine, hence being able to send this from the laptop.

    In hope
    Mags

    Go to start Run... cmd

    Then type: ipconfig /renew

    If this doesn't work you may need to check your McAfee settings.

    Thanks Jefree - as you will see that did not work unfortunately. Long post follows

    Thanks for help – I tried that and got the message ’An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection: an operation on something that is not a socket’. Sorry rather a long message coming up.

    When my machine starts up I get the following two messages
    1 Mobile Device Properties – the TCP/IP network transport is not installed
    2 Microsoft .NET framework – An unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit the application will shut down immediately.
    I click on details and get the stuff below:_

    just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

    ************** JIT Debugging **************
    To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this
    application or machine (machine.config) must have the
    jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
    The application must also be compiled with debugging
    enabled.

    For example:

    <configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
    </configuration>

    When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
    will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine
    rather than being handled by this dialog.

    The broadband wifi is working on the laptop but the Desktop which has the newly installed McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007 installed now defaults to dial-up.
    I have looked at the connections – the LAN says limited or no connection. Under the Support tab and Connection Status there is the message ‘This probel occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer’

    On the Navigation Pane in the Network Connections menu I can see an IP address and Subnet Mask No. IPv6 enabled.

    I have a Mio168 PDA which uses ActiveSync. Not sure why this should have impact but just in case.

    Any ideas, help will be much appreciated.

    The fact that you've installed McAfee Internet Security 2007 on your desktop PC recently may just be a coincidence. The problem is that whatever it is on your network (probably your broadband router) that is supposed to be giving your PC its IP address isn't doing so. If you have the PC connected to a broadband router with an ethernet cable, try switching off the power to the router. Then switch off your PC. Leave the router off for 30 seconds, then switch it back on. Then switch your PC back on. Do you still have the same problem? If you do, we'll tell you how to give your PC a fixed IP address so that it doesn't ask the router for one.

    Let us know how you get on

    Thanks so much for such a quick response. Regretfully it did not work. Tried it twice just to make sure.

    Look forward to getting your solution!

    Many thanks
    Mags
