Error code 10-C-media AC97
I have a black Exclamation mark against C-media AC97 and have tried uninstalling and then re booting but still get the same indication when windows has re installed this driver.
I have ear phones connected through a new sound card which work but am un able to use my speakers due to this problem when connected to the normal jack point unless I remove the earphones.
Any ideas what to try next?

Most likely you cannot use both the motherboard audio as well as the sound card.
To use the card disabling the AC97 is most likely necessary.
Try disabling in the Device Manager. There also might be a setting in the BIOS.

thanks,
I thought it might be something like that.I did try deleting in device manager and hoped that on reboot windows would install a new driver and all would be well but it was just the same with the black ! on a yellow background.
Is there any way in which I can re install my speakers as well as the head set?

Again I would suspect that you cannot use both the card and the on-board chip at the same time. You must disable one or the other. Not delete but disable and not use.
Many speakers have a headphone jack actually on the speaker. Headphones usually override the speaker output.

Many thanks again,
It seems that it is as I suspected but that is a good point, about speakers with
a jack point for a headset, and one I will pursue, as crawling around the back of the PC to change over every time isn't really an option.
There must be a lot of people these days who are in the same position as me due to the greatly increasing usage of Msn and yahoo messenger so if Speakers with a jack point are viable it would certainly make life easier.

I see the headphone port on many speakers and some keyboards as well as many new cases have front ports for audio as well as USB.
I am sure there must also be multi-functional sound cards that would accommodate both speakers and headsets but I am not personally aware of such.
I also see some USB headsets that bypass the audio card completely.
