When I switch on my PC the light comes on and I can hear whirring, but nothing else, the screen remains black and the whirring continues. Obviously I am completely illiterate. I don't use this PC it is for my siblings. I have a laptop of which the wireless connection is connected to the PC, could this problem effect my laptop? Can anyone help?

Thank you very much.
It seems your backlight, your monitor itself or your cable is gone.
What sort of cable attachment is it to your monitor?
Is it like any of these: http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/825/...criteresn.html
If so do you have a spare one you can check with, to see if the cables faulty?
Is this a new problem? Was this computer working OK previously?
What is the make and model of the computer? Does it sound any Beeps?
Have you moved the computer recently? You may need to open it up and reseat components.
Do you get anything on the monitor such as "No Signal"?
Does the monitor light (or LED) come on at all? Is it amber or green?
As to your laptop: if it is networked thru this computer and this computer is not functioning then I would imagine that it would affect your connection.
If the laptop is connected directly to the router than the PC should not be an issue.
Do you have any problems with your laptop connection?
Is this a new problem? Was this computer working OK previously? - Yes, but I noticed the whirring was more constant than it normally is.
What is the make and model of the computer? Does it sound any Beeps? - It's a HP pavilion. No beeps
Have you moved the computer recently? You may need to open it up and reseat components. - The computer hasn't been moved since we got it, but I will check if anything is loose.
Do you get anything on the monitor such as "No Signal"? - Yes.
Does the monitor light (or LED) come on at all? Is it amber or green? - Green, then 'no signal', then amber.
As to your laptop: if it is networked thru this computer and this computer is not functioning then I would imagine that it would affect your connection.

Do you have any problems with your laptop connection? - Not as I am aware.
- Thanks -
My first suspects would be the RAM seating and then the Graphics Card (if it is not on-board). Also see if you can tell if the whirring is a fan or if it is the hard drive.
My first step would be to remove all the RAM and start up once. You should get a series of beeps to let you know that you have no RAM.
Then take one stick of RAM and re-seat it. Try again. If still no go try a different slot. If still nothing try a different stick in different slots.
Here is a good read re: ESD in case you are not familiar with working inside the case: http://www.d-a-l.com/articles/library/72.html
