    Windows XP Home Wont start

    Hello,
I have a compaq computer with Windows XP that will not start. When I turn the computer on it has a black screen then comes up with a message that says:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt

    \windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Select r at the first screen to start repair."

I do not have an this cd. I believe that any windows xp cd will work (pro or home) after looking online. I dont have these cds and can not get them from anyone I know. Is there any other way to solve this problem?

    Thank you
    Jay

What is the exact Compaq model?

You should find instructions on that site for purchasing Recovery CD's.

Thank you for the fast reply
I am not sure of the computer model number I will have to check on that. I have the recovery disks for the computer, but I do not want to delete everything off the computer if at all possible.

    Thanks
    Jay

This page refers to the use of a Microsoft XP CD:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q307545

You can try the Compaq CD but often they do not have the same functions.

Compaq might also have a Non-Destructive Recovery option which relates to a Microsoft Repair Install.

To get anywhere on the Compaq site you need to know at least like Compaq Presario or Pavilion or ... etc.

How will I be able to use the guided help if I can not get the computer to the internet, or is it some kind of file I save to a cd then put in the computer and start it?

    Thanks
    Jay

I found that I can save it to use on another computer. I will give this a try and see what happens.

    Thanks for the help
