Windows Explorer errors

    Windows Explorer errors

I've JUST been getting three crashes like that. Off a system hibernate, I received them as Windows explorer kept restarting and failing thus shutting. Along with it all other applications chosen to run were also crashing. Even Task Manager and Autoruns crashed due to this. Although I could still see my wallpaper and the rest of my desktop.

This is what I get.. and YES after a restart and a shut down, everything loaded up fine (its the computer I'm posting off)

    No system errors

    Only Application errors

    Code:
    Source:Application Error Event ID: 1000
Faulting application taskmgr.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x0007f8ea.

    Source:Application Error Event ID:1000
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x011efb61.

    Source:Winlogon Event ID:1002
The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.
grimerz and IdahoFella21, did you get the same errors?

I've encountered it again, in the middle of having some vital applications running

Friggin lost all my work as only a shutdown is possible whe it happens

    Found this:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900004
This problem occurs because the Rkadmin.dll file is copied to the System32 folder when you install the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit. The Rkadmin.dll file may cause an access violation after you run a file search operation several times.

    WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, uninstall the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit.
    The differnce is this bit:
    Event ID: 1000
Description: Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module rkadmin.dll, version 1.0.0.10, fault address 0x0000d8d9.
    I do not get that!

How do I uninstall the Windows Resource Kit 2000 anyway if I haven't got it installed?

I don't think this applies to me.

    Ine reads fault address 0x011efb61.

    Thanks

    Here's my error exactly:
    http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-258437.php

This is what he/she was told:
Try run sfc /scannow with the original XP CD. If still no avail, you may need to perform a repair install of XP. After the repair installation, you need to re-activate windows and update the patches again; then run chkdisk, disk clean up and defrag. Backup your important data files first for just in case.
I've done chkdsk /r, SFC /scannow, disk defragment etc just a week ago!!

    Nooo way

I remember I installed a hotfix lately... how do I find it and uninstall it, any idia's?

Well here is the cure as I've found on every website I've visited!
    http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/Tip.aspx?id=7193

I don't believe it but yeah they say its Windows Media Player as the culprit, or a virus. Either do what my above post says in its beginning and if not the repair reinstall OR dreadfully, the complete clean reinstall.

    Can it get any worse?

This error is very generic in the sense that the error (condition) is explorer.exe being forced to shut down. Unless the details match exactly in the error there is nothing in common. As such it is best to start your own thread for your particular errors.

Do your faulting modules match all the links you see? Point being the faulting module could be anything and the surface error the same.

In one it is stated that your shell was stopped. If that is the issue this tool might help:

    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

Any items highlighted in red or pink shades might be suspect.

Otherwise we can look further. I am going to cut up this thread as it no longer addresses the original poster.

Ok sorry about that. My fault.

Yes I looked at one of the modules to identify in the last post: ntdll.dll

Ive received this at least once.

Yes the winlogon shell automatically stopping is the first error that appears i EventViewer before this explorer.exe error.

I've installed the ShellExtension Viewer and we'll see how it goes.

    Thanks!

Since you've tried about everything else I'd suggest:

As a first response you might want to post a HijackThis log for review by our Pros in that section:

Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.

    (Not in this section please).

Please specify briefly what issues you appear to be experiencing along with your log.

Well I've deleted the Eraser and as I was typing a reply to you my computer rebooted.

So now, straight after that I ran, a full anti-virus scan (perfect), full anti-spyware scan (found two critical and deleted) full sfc/ scannow (only twice CD required), full disk defragment (drive perfect condition with zero defragment), full chkdsk (perfect) and powermax4.23 harddisk test (perfect). Yesterday my RAM with Memtest86 was also perfect

And right now, after the reboot I have ZERO problems! It seems certainly that it was Eraser and it even caused this problem after I had uninstalled it (but not rebooted)

Oh and my typing is perfectly normal now as well (apart form MY typing )

And it seems like for sure it was Eraser.

Now in the software section, someone asked for a shredder/cleaner etc. That is where I got this from, someone else recommending it.

Note: DONT USE IT! [it shuts down with errors and starts making other applications like your antivirus etc also shut down with errors]

    Sheesh man I'm tired!

Thanks a alot Jephree , seriously a star for replying and being wonderfully patient and helpful

    All free of charge

I'll leave the HijackThis log, until I get some other or this error in repeat.

Goodday or night where ever you live.

    Actually its all changed!

Just now I've received the errors consecutively.

They are different but I can't access the files to show you them. The files are stored away so that involves the use of explorer and its failing currently on startup.

I can't click anywhere so I can't make a HijackThis log etc, sorry.

I couldn't access the Control panel sections earlier so I shut down. When running the Office XP CD I was getting errors and when installing PAINT.NET I was getting MS Passport.net errors. I have just installed 6 photo/video/audio applications and was about to install Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Premier 6.5 as the last two I needed. I still want MS Photo Editor but can't even access the CD right now nor Start Menu.

I've rebooted 3 times now, meeting the same error on every startup.

It all starts with winlogon suddenly crashing and then explorer.exe follows along with most other programs, even Task Manager.

I'm on the edge to throwing it all away. :badly frustrated:

    Here got it!

    Code:
    szAppName : winlogon.exe szAppVer : 0.0.0.0 szModName : unknown
    szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00b2fb53
    D:\DOCUME~1\Home\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER6cac.dir00\winlogon.exe.mdmp
    D:\DOCUME~1\Home\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER6cac.dir00\appcompat.txt

    AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: urlmon.dll
    ModVer: 6.0.2900.2180 Offset: 00007915
I'll post the HijackThis log now as I've been able to access using the keyboard. Mouse access is not permitted.
