We have a Toshiba Equium laptop with Conexant AMC Audio installed as the "Sound" option for both speakers and mic. Speakers work no problem - there doesn't seem to be a default mic on here (could be wrong..?).

Labtec headset (incl mic) was used to test the mic but no matter how we adjust the sound settings, the mic just will not work and voice is not detected. Is this a known issue? A driver issue? What do you suggest?

Have you been into control panel/sounds and audio devices/voice/test hardware? A wizard will pop up, run the test and get you to speak into the microphone etc to make sure its working properly.
