    CD re write problem

Can no longer copy files to CD - the following msg is displayed -

Cannot Copy My Documents - The disk is write protected.
Remove the write-protection or use another disk.

I have tried several different disks all to no avail and also other applications to copy to cd.

    Any advice gratefully received

are you copying disk to disk?

try copying music or documents to a CD

if you are copying a disk, if it is a game, there will be some kind of write protection on it to stop breach of copywrite laws (i.e copying your mates disk or copying a disk for a friend) im not saying that is what you want to copy it for im just pointing out the reason why that is there.

sometimes i want to copy CDs just so i know i have a backup (i usualy use/break things)

    Hope this helps
    Mike

what is the make and model of your CD RW drive?

Rt click on my computer, click properties go to hardware and click device manager, click the + next to DVD/CD-ROM drives

is there a yellow question mark next to it?

go to device manager again, right click on your CD RW drive and glick properties, go to the 'driver' tab and click 'update driver'

also, did you install any new hardware/software before you started to have this problem?

ok - done that! could not find a better match than the software currently installed.

it hasnt been working for some time, so cannot remember what software may have been added - but no hardware. how might new software have caused the upset??

how do I tell if it is a software or a hardware problem??!!

    thanks for your patience

you normaly determine if it is a hardware/software problem because the problem starts soon after you install the particular hardware/software... you dont have roxio do you?

do you have an xp disk?

if so, insert it and hold shift until the spinning of the disk slows down (this stops it from autoloading) then click start>run and type in 'sfc /scannow' this checks that all your windows files are intact

but I do have a Product Recovery disk - is this any good?

ok, I have removed Pinnacle which is the r/w software that came with computer - seem to remember having problems with it b4.

the message I now get when trying to copy from My Docs to cd is "windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this folder. What do you want windows to do? Retry, Skip, Cancel"
