    no sound

i've just installed a new harddrive into my laptop which ment a complete reinstallation of xp home edition, now i've been able to get every thing up and running with driver updates apart from the sound, i used driver genius to find out what i needed (REAL TEK AC97 AUDIO FOR VIA (R) AUDIO CONTROL) but even after been installed there was still no sound , when i use media player 10 i get Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly, any help would be great thanks, below is my Belarc computer profile summary.

    try this: ftp://152.104.238.194/pc/audio/WDM_A393.zip

you need to extract (un-zip) it and then double click the .exe file

you will then need to restart your computer

    Hope this helps

gave that ago mate but got same problem, also when i look at the hardware in the sound and audio devices properties for the REALTEK AC97 it says location: PCI bus 0,device 17, function 5 , then Device status: this device cannot start (code 10), also the location of the Audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, media control devices, legacy video capture devices and video codecs is unknown yet the device status all say are working properly.
