    computer has gone loopy !

    Hello everyone

I am trying, so far unsuccessfully, to get my wife's computer to work. From behaving extremely well, it has gone in the blink of an eye, misbehaving in fine style.

I know this problem has been posted before:

'Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close'

When fired up the computer start-up procedure goes fine. However, once on the desktop nothing can be done except sit there and view the desktop. Nothing, and I do mean nothing, can be accessed, and any attempt brings up the dreaded message, regardless of what I try, except I did run Reg.fix which did sort out the registry, but did not help with the problem!
May I ask if anyone has a clue please, apart from reinstalling winxp.

    regards

Hit Ctrl > Alt > Delete

There you get the Task Manager?

If so click File > New Task > Run... %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Choose a restore point prior to the problems.

Thank you jephree. My wife's machine will not let me input messages into the 'run' bit.

However I did manage to go back in time to a much earlier date but I still get the same message about Windows Explorer being 'up the creek?'

Will the computer work in Safe Mode?

Repeatedly tap the F8 key after the Computer logo screen (or BIOS POST) yet before Windows starts to load.

Also what type of XP CD do you have? A retail version or an OEM (pre-installed).

If the latter what is the make and model of the computer?

    Thank you again jephree

Unfortunately the same problem, exactly appears in 'SAFE mode,' as well.

I used the original xpdisk and did a 'chkdsk' but could not get 'Run\ Scandisk or any other 'run' commands. All that happens is the annoyingly same, 'Window Explorer etc., and needs to close down,' appears.

There is a dual-boot on the computer, and I can get into win98se OK, and also onto the Winxp disk using DOS.

I would suggest doing a Repair Install as seen here:
