Why all folders Read Only (greyed)?

Why do all my folders have a grey check mark in the Read Only box of Properties please? And when I remove it, and apply it to all files/subfolders, why does it return to that state?

How can it make sense anyway? I *can* delete files from these folders, and add files to them!

    Hope someone can explain please?

The read only mark on folders is normal. Here's some info about it:
XP just marks all folders read-only by default, BUT, the folders are not
    read-only and
should work as normal. Just ignore the read-only mark. If you have a piece
of software that is having probs writing to a folder then try to get an xp
complatable version of the program. Or post the exact probs your having.
Most likely if it is a well written app then is it not the read-only check
box, more likely a permissions setting.

Here is some info on it:

XP makes folders read-only by design. In XP the read only attribute
is only used by explorer to see if the folder is a special or a system
    folder. Read up on it:

    or for other win versions:

Thanks jephree, appreciate the fast and full response. That's reassuring.

Hope I haven't screwed anything up in my attempts to change it though! Currently checking, and will come back in new post if I need help.
