I upgraded to XP Pro, and now my ethernet port isn't working
Hello everyone. I recently upgraded to Windows XP Professional, from Windows 2000 Professional. It upgraded fine, however when I went to activate XP, it wouldn't connect over the internet. I found this to be strange, as it was able to connect during the upgrade process and it was able to download updated files. I went into the device manager, and noticed it wasn't even installed. So I went to the add hardware tab underneath control panel, and it found it, told me it was a Intel(R) Pro/100 VE Network Connection (an integrated port) and asked for a driver. When I selected a driver from the list (I don't have the disk, so I was hoping windows had it) I was able to find an exact match. When choosing that however, I was told that :
"This Device Cannot Start (Code 10)".
I tried other drivers, and continued to get the same error. I restarted, and am still getting the same thing.
If someone could help me out, that would help immensly. I have a Intel Celeron 2.06 Ghz processor, 1 gig of DDR RAM, Samsung 48x CD-ROM, and a modem (I can't recall the name off hand), and a Nvidia Geforce 4400 (or 4000, not entirely sure which) installed, along with all the other integrated ports. As far as I can tell, everything else works properly, except for this port.

Did you install SP2?
What is the make and model of the motherboard?
-
I have not installed SP 2, I picked that up tonight at work. As far as the make and model of the motherboard, I'm not entirely sure (How would I go about finding out --> I'd imagine it would be intel as it's an intel processor, and all the integrated ports on it are intel, also, it came with my IBM Netvista desktop computer).

Without being on-line the ID will be difficult. There are many scans/ programs that you can import via CD such as CPU Z: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
Or do you know the exact IBM Netvista model and #?
You might go ahead and install SP2. Pre SP2 and especially pre SP1 XP's have difficulty accessing the internet. Here is one common problem:

Thanks Jephree. I'll try your advice when I get out of work in a couple of hours and post back with the results. As far as the model number and number go, I'm pretty sure It's NetVista in the M series, and either 6790, 6792, and 6794 (I went out and checked the different types of series and models of them, and I know it's not an S series, and it didn't seem to be an A series because that appeared to have more than mine did, so those are what I could find for the M series, but as I said, I will verfiy this when I get back to my dorm tonight).

IBM should have your drivers if needed:

BrokenWits,
Navigate to the motherboard manufacturers website and use that to find and install the latest drivers of your own motherboard make, and model - especially the LAN Intel Pro/100 one which is the one I've just installed. Make sure you have it "enabled" as well.
I had the same problem until I did this and my machine is similar to yours with all Intel motherboard components and drivers.
Best Regards.

I tried installing SP2, and also, I tried running the cpuid that you gave me the link for Jephree, however, this caused me to learn of a different problem. My USB mouse is still working, however my usb jump drives are not. I tried them in mulitple ports and got nothing. The make and model for the computer is 8315-b5u.

Did SP2 sort out the Network Connection? Or by tried do you mean that you could not? Did you have SP2 on one of these USB drives? When you plug in the drives there is no indication that an USB device has been added?
You may need to load SP2 from a CD.

Sorry, I did install SP2, and it was on a cd. My usb devices worked prior, just not now (with the exception of my mouse).
