Jephree - i should have said in my last post: this is a new problem that occurred only after installed a usb wireless keyboard and mouse. After i installed them, windows wouldnt boot at all! I reinstalled windows and the problem started then. I did try uninstalling them but that didnt work either.

How did you reinstall windows? What type of CD do you have?

With either a Repair or Clean install of XP from a Microsoft CD you should have a brand new OS.

If you did not run a Clean Install this might be necessary. This will remove all data on your current C: drive however.

yo - i fixed the problem by re-installing windows. all sorted now. i think windows was missing some dll files or something. thanks for your help jephree, liquid and ford prefect!

Thanks for the update. Glad you are sorted.
Just as an aside, did you re-install windows on top of your existing system, i.e. as an upgrade or repair?
It would be useful to know for the future.
