    Internet explorer help needed

I can surf most of the internet no problem whatsoever, but if i try to access my hotmail account, enter the checkout of some shopping sites or even my online bank i get this message :-

" The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. "

I have checked the norton firewall following advice from my isp supplier, but cannot access the norton utility as it will not let me make any changes whatsoever, all i get is the following message:

" A norton personal firewall account with supervisor access must be logged in to uninstall this product. if norton personal firewall is not currently running run it again from the start menu and log in again".

But when i try to do anything at all with norton i get the following pop up -
" Access denied, only the supervisor can view or change the options".

I'm pretty sure it is a firewall problem, but according to my computer i am not currently running a firewall ?????

Any help would be gratefully received and i'll gladly send someone a case a lager or a nice bottle of whiskey if anyone can help solve this for me

What was the source of this Norton product?

Can you not stop it from running? Turn it off? If not what problems are you having in doing so?

Have you tried removing it from Add/Remove Programs? Of couse it would need to be turned off first.

You can stop it from starting via start Run... msconfig | Startup

    Also:

Error: "A Norton Internet Security account with Supervisor access must be logged on . . ." when uninstalling Norton Internet Security

cannot stop it from running whatsoever.
Have tried the add and remove programe, but it tells me i need supervisor access.
tried to stop it running from the start, but again that did not work.
Managed to get remote assistance from the symantec site last night, was online with this fella for 1hour 20 mins and he could not solve this problem, said he had never come across this before and he was going to find a solution and e-mail me......
Hasn't done so far, but i live in hope...

If by the source you mean where did i get the product, it was pre-installed on the laptop.

I really can see no way out of this other than a clean install

What is the make and model of the laptop?

Since it was pre-installed it might not be removable but it can certainly be stopped from starting.

Anything can if you know where all the startup files are. Autoruns will show you everything that starts on your computer and it can all be turned off.

My laptop is a Amilo M7400 Fujitsu siemens.

There are no Norton selections in my start up.

Have changed girlfriends 3 times and moved house 4 times since i got this, so doubt i have any of the original discs.

    Did you use Autoruns?

Here is also a link to startup locations:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...utorial44.html

It could be Norton or Symantec or NAV or NSW or many other possibilities but you can stop it if you look for it. The Symantec link listed several file names and locations:

    Ran which one?

Autoruns simply lists startup programs and services and where they are found. It does not report errors.

    FIX FOUND!!! FIX FOUND!!!

This should work if you are using Windows XP and have Norton Personal Firewall installed.

I had a feeling it was to do with my NORTON PERSONAL FIREWALL software, so I tried deleting it, but it stated I needed to be an administrator, but then I discovered you could diable this function.

    1. Start
    2. Control Panel
    3. Administrative tools
    4. Services

Here you will see a listing stating 'Norton Unerase Protection'

    5. Right click on this and go to properties
    6. Under 'startup type'. select 'disabled'

Now close this down and delete Norton Firewall through Add/Remove programs and when you restart you PC everything will be rosie in the garden again.

Well what can i say but thanks to everyone who offered help and assistance, your time and patience was certainly gratefully received by me

I hope this message serves to help others who think there is no way of sorting this problem out, as others said there is always someone who has had similar problems and fixed them. If it wasn't for sites like this we would all be paying for the services of some computer wizard or constantly reformatting our computers !!!!!

    Once again thanks everyone
