Question sound has mind of it's own

hi all,i have a strange problem regarding the sound on my comp.
this afternoon,it just started lowering the volume on it's own.
if i left click my sound icon, the little grey rectangular box opens, and i can watch the bar decreasing to zero, and when i try to lift the bar back up,it will go,but then starts to move down again.
this only started when i went on the bbc website earlier on,and opened up a 'sky at night 'clip, which is a safe! site.
i've updated norton and done a scan, but it found nothing [as usual!],and i did the same with adaware se, and spybot.the last two found little thing's such as cookies and the like, but i haven't found any viruses.
any ideas or thoughts? i'd certainly like to hear them.
    thanks......Daz.

sometimes restarting the pc solves all problems.

hi madguy, yeah i turned the comp off, then updated norton, adaware and spybot.still the same after restart though.
its also the same when i open c-media mixer, the first bar on the left starts to slide down, all other bars seem fine.

    hmmm...
best bet... some tech guru comes to this post and asks u to post a hijack this log, which will tell him if ur infected with anything.

for my part, i'll tell u to empty ur internet history, clear all cache, restart in safe mode and see what happens.
then restart back in normal mode and see if this sound thing repeats.

if so, post a hijack this log anyway, someone who knows to interpret may come along and help u out.

finally, if nothing works, simply rollback to yesterdays system configuration.

i admit i have never heard of a similiar prob before.... maybe some hardware setting which overrides the software settings?

but i will keep watching this space.

could u give a link to the url which u suspect caused the problem?

hi madguy, this is what i was watching when the sound first started playing up.
the film started okay, and there was no vision problem, just the volume.
i will download HJthis and post the log.
thanx for the quick response, and for your helpful suggestions

just thought i should tell you that the sound has been ok for the last hour or so,
maybe my comp was just having a hissy fit or something :-)
