HELP!!! Mouse and Audio Skipping Stutter

Hey everyone!, I new to all of this but I really need someones help. I have been having this problem for about a year and cant figure it out. I have a Dell Dimension XPS gaming system, its suppose to be top of the line however if I run more than one or two applications my mouse skips and so do my MP3s. I have been searching and begging for solutions but cant find one. I did discover that my Primary IDE channel had gone back to PIO however after finding instructions it now is Ultra DMA Mode 2 and continues to be. Well, after one night of no skipping I thought my problem had been solved. The next day it was back. The odd thing is, when the audio and mouse begin to skip, my computer is "calm" or somewhat silent. However, if I go to a movie file and open it in real player or media player, the computer seems to "kick in". It sounds as though the fan speed increases and things get better and the skipping stops. About a minute after I have clicked out of the movie file, the computer/fan speed seems to slow down and the skipping returns. I dont know what to do, can anyone help?

Did things work OK a year ago?

Are you sure that you hear the CPU fan and not the hard drive working?

Monitor your Task Manager > Processes

Right click an empty area of the Taskbar and then click Task Manager

Do you see any spike in the CPU Usage when this problem occurs?

Do you see any particular process peaking?

    Also:

Look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for red X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

It may very well be the HD, but I have never heard a computer do what mine is doing and it has done it since its been purchased. If I am simply browsing the net, or playing Solitaire, my computer "sounds normal". But click on a mpg file or something of that nature and it sounds like my computer "revs up" and gets noiser. Once the mpg is done and I click out of the program after about a minute, my computer "sounds normal" again.

I would test this by monitoring your Task Manager. See how the CPU usage relates to what you are doing.

And also review your Event Viewer.

I have been monitoring my task mgr but I have not noticed any processes spiking during the episodes however on occasion I do see my CPU usage spike to 67-87% at times but it quickly returns to 10-14% sometimes 17-20%. This problem has been occuring for a while but when I first received the system from Dell about a year ago, it did not do this. When the comp was about 2 months old, it began

I did find some red X errors, heres what they are saying. I did not note the time this last stuttering happened so Im sure if it conincides with the problem.

"Application Error" "Faulting application error ieexplorer.exe version 6.0.2900.2180 faulting module urlmon.dll version 6.0.2900.2960. fault address

"The COM+Event system detected a bad return code during its internal processing HRESULT...so on. (If you need more, let me know)

---These two events seem to occur quite regularly, is this something I should be concerned with.

A CPU usage at idle should be less than 5% with the Task Manager running.

    Your errors are IE errors:

To resolve this problem in Internet Explorer, follow these steps:

    1. Quit all programs that are running.
    2. Click Start and then Run...
    3. Type: regsvr32 urlmon.dll and then click OK.
    4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.
If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below prefaced with the regsvr32):

    • Shdocvw.dll
    • Actxprxy.dll
    • Oleaut32.dll
    • Mshtml.dll
    • Browseui.dll
    • Shell32.dll

What is the exact Dell model and number?
