What is the exact DELL DIMENSION XPS model?
http://support.dell.com/
Also if you could detect any process in the Task Manager that appears to activate itself this would be useful.

Sorry I cannot find any more specific ideas at this point in time.
I would still try to see if you can pinpoint a process active in the Task Manager.
Dell does have some troubleshooting tools that might help at the link above.

Hi. I am having the exact same issue, with my screen and audio stuttering and skipping. I also own a DELL XPS with pretty much the same specifications as yours.
I've tried almost everything, but without success. Once I changed my Audigy Sound Card from one PCI Slot to another and it solved the problem - for about a month. Then the problem returned.
This is what I have found so far, may be of use:
-I have no problems when executing sound using hardware acceleration. For instance, using winamp with the sound output set to the Audigy using hardware acceleration or playing 3d games causes no problem.
-I believe the problem is related when sound goes through "software buffer" against "hardware buffer". When doing the sound tests available in DirectX DXDiag console (dxdiag.exe), all sounds executed through "hardware buffer" come out OK, it is when it begins playing as "Software Buffer" that the stuttering begins.
-I also believe it has someting to do with a conflict with the graphics card, because when the stuttering begins, I can make it go away temporarily be executing a 3d application, like the Direct3d tests on the dxdiag console. WHen I run any that test, the computer returns to normal for a while.
-The stuttering becames pronounced specially when playing an Adobe Flash Player movie for a long time.
-I changed the sound card temporarily to a Genius, it didn't solve the problem.
-I did a complete Windows reinstall, with drive formatting included, it didn't solve the problem.
-I installed and uninstalled almost every known driver for the sound card and the graphics card, even an unofficial one, it didn't solve the problem.
-I also believe it is related to some kind of IRQ conflict, as things got better for a while when changing the Sound Card from a PCI slot to another.
-The only thing I can think to try is to change the ACPI configuration (the one that assigns IRQs) to 'Standard PC'. I tried it once but i had to reconfigure by hand all the hardware installed, so I rolled that option back. However, I might try it in the future.
I am extremely annoyed with this crappy problem.
Hope this helps and maybe someone has another idea, considering all I have tried.
