    HELP!! Failing to RESTART!!

    Hello DAL

I have a Vaio RA, a week ago my computer got corrupted so I recover the hard disk with the recovery CD provided by SONY, today I installed all the necessary applications again as before and used it normally. But then I happen to notice that after using the PC for a long period (like 1 to 2 hours) when I tried to restart the system, it fails to do so. When I clicked restart, it began to close all the applications, but after closing some, it stop proceeding, and the CPU is not running either (u know, like not making anymore noises) and it just stayed there, without restartiing. My norton internet security 2006 won't open before I try to restart, do you think that there is something to do with norton? the norton home screen appears but not the options inside it, and it just froze there. Also I had a external hard drive connected to the PC when I was instaling things, I wonder if there is something to do with that too, please help me out, THANK YOU!!!

What is the exact RA model number?

Was the Recovery successful? Was SP2 included?

    What applications did you install?

Was Norton supplied by Sony or did you purchase it separately?

Were things OK before installing Norton?

I would uninstall it just to see if things change:

Removing and reinstalling Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiSpam, or Norton Personal Firewall (2006/2005/2004 versions)

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...on_nam&seg=hho

Also during these processes removing the external hard drive is a good idea.

Also you might check your Event Viewer to see what was freezing up:

Look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for red X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

    Answers in your order:

    1. Vaio RA: VGC-RA840G
    2. I had installed Office 2003 Standard, Norton Internet Security 2006, Logitech Camera, Windows Live Messenger, Counter-Strike Source, Powerword 2006, iTunes 7, HP Printer software and driver.
    3. It is supplied by SONY, but it was version 2005, I installed the 2006 by myself.
    4. Things were OK before and after Norton, i just happen to notice the problem lately while installing other stuff.

Was SP2 installed? Is this on your recovery disk?

If not install SP2 first. Windows Update.

Try a System Restore to a point prior to the problem.

Install only one program at a time and reboot verifying that things are OK.

I would install Norton products after all others or else always disable Norton while installing programs.

    I would recommend removing Norton.

    See if it changes anything.

    AVG offers a free anti-virus:

    http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

XP SP2 has an in-bound Firewall in the Security Center.

These can be used temporarily or permanently.

The firewall limitation is that it only blocks incoming activities whereas most commercial firewalls block both in-coming and out-going.

Most of the free firewalls have been eliminated unfortunately.

Norton is a very intense piece of software. It establishes itself throughout windows and the registry and often causes conflicts.

I paid for Norton for a few years before I just threw it out (but of course that is my personal experience and decision).

If you want to retain Norton products we can try to find out where the conflicts are coming from. It is obviously conflicting with something else on your computer.

So you mean using the Windows XP Firewall at the security center will also be good?
