Computer keeps crashing on start up

my computer(winxp sp2), keeps crashing on start up. it will just completely freeze. this happens when it gets to the windows loading screen with the blue scrolling bar. also, lately it has been freezing on the option menu where you pick safe mode or start with last good config etc, or it will say a disk error has occured and i need to ctrl alt delete.

the freezing has started like last week and i can get into the computer 6/10 tries and it has been getting worse.

    thanks,
    daniel

    Try running Check Disk:

    start Run... cmd

    Type:

    chkdsk /f

When asked if you want to run on next boot? Y or N?

    Type: Y

    And reboot,

This will check for and fix any hard disk errors.

If you have an XP CD boot into the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r from there:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;314058

chkdsk /f is a quicker version than chkdsk /r but it is not available via the Recovery Console.
