Hi,
A neighbour had a failing hard drive, so we backedup the documents and settings folder, then restored the machine from the recovery disk
restored to XP SP1a
updated neccesary drivers from dell site for graphics, sound
autoupdated from microsoft.com
recreated users
copied the folder structures back from the earlier backup.
All seems OK, but one of the accounts exhibits behaviour which, while not obviously harmful, is odd. It makes me concerned I did something odd when I copied back the folders.
She has a Local Settings folder in which , among others, are a "Temp" and "Temporary Internet Files"
Temporary Internet Files appears empty, but right-click properties indicates it contains 8Mb of content
OK so I figured that I had some Folder Display thing, so I selected the buttons for the folder to display all system files too. Still appears empty in Windows explorer.
The other 4 accounts I can see the Content.IE subfolder in windows explorer
So I started a DOS window from CMD and cd'd to the folder and sure enough I can see a number of folders and subfolders.
Now wverything appears to be OK, but I'm concerned that if a virus came from a web page of download it's going to be hard to dig it out from this folder structure.
I guess it could be an ACL thing, but the odd thing is that this user is the admin
any thoughts on this would be much appreciated
hi, on explorer (my computer or my documents or something) click tools>folder options and go to the 'View' tab, Where is says 'Hidden files and folders' Click 'Show hidden files and folders' Do you see the files now?
Hope this helps
Mike
