Computer Restarts spontaneously
-
Re: Computer Restarts spontaneously
entering this thread late, but i have been getting "unknown device error" as well
the error started 2 or more weeks ago while running nvidia graphics card, i installed a new game (old stronghold) and it crashed 20 minutes in. So i updated all drivers, uninstalled, reinstalled, still happened. Then it started doing it for other games as well, and so i thought it was the card- i removed the card/drivers and problem still persisted.
I have updated winxp, have no video card running, and have re-installed windows about 5 times, the last time reformatting the recovery partition and everything from the cd. (also updated all video device drivers, etc.)
Now I never know when i will get one. I can just be surfing the net, or leave the computer (without any programs running) and when i come back the computer has restarted itself. Also programs stop responding constantly with "referenced memory errors" or .dll errors BTW i have run memtest for hours, no errors were found with ram- i also ran pc-doctor on everything i could and it found everything was working.
have talked to hp "support" for at least 3 hours on 4 occasions and they continue to think it's software problems and have me change the same crap i've already done myself 1000 times which is frustrating and a waste of time. (the last time resulted in me having to re-install windows due to having me uncecheck some startup items which caused the computer to not even boot to the welcome screen)
i've had this comp for a year, no problems at all. Once the first reboot happened, been getting random reboots since.
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=b3d362b4-29a3-47e4-aa4e-7e29edb1d42c&SID=10[/url]
the above is what i get consistently -2 or 3 times daily if not more(among various program errors). Before my last re-install i got a hardware failure error code report listing cpu, motherboard, psu- but i haven't got that since.....Something in my head keeps saying psu, but there may be something i'm just not seeing?
here are specs, doubt if they are impressive or helpful
hp pavilion a1130n
winxp media center amd athlon 64 processor @ 2.2 ghz
1Gb kingston ram
hipro 300w psu
256mb ati express 200 integrated graphics

Look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for red X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.
How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
Also and for more detail:
Go to start | search (type in) .dmp
Note the location of your .dmp files.
Then:
1) Download and install the
Debugging Tools from Microsoft
2) Download and install this
debugwiz
3) Open the Wiz & Browse to, or paste in the path to, your .dmp file.
4) After the Wiz creates a Text document attach it back to this thread.

ok here are system error codes from the last few days. I am no technician, so i have no idea what i'm looking for. The system is more stable (today) that it has been (i uninstalled norton and installed avg and outpost, as well as nearly every program i don't use often), but windows explorer quits unexpectedly as well as firefox. Also today i fixed the TCIP warning that was scattered through the report.

Can you remember any hardware or software changes (updates) that might have coincided with the first notice of this problem?
Your errors are on the graphics but also suggest RAM (which may also be the Graphics RAM as opposed to the main board).
HP offers this troubleshooter:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...59295&lang=en&
If your computer has been creating DUMP logs they would be more helpful in their detail.
All of these processes will take time.
If Clean Installs of XP do not solve the problem then you can pretty much look at hardware.
---------------------
Did you open that bug log via the DeBug Wiz?

The problem started while playing a new (older)game i installed. the computer just shut down while playing. So after that initial shutdown I updated drivers for the card/game which didn't help. I took out the graphics card, and replaced it with another, same crashes. So then the computer started crashing more often, not just when playing games, and application errors also became more frequent. Also i should mention other games would still play fine- LOTR, and Madden - the older games (stronghold, civ 3) would definitely cause crashes. I do not recall updating windows around this time.
So one day the computer crashed, restarted and the screen was black, I powered off/then back on and same thing. The harddrive was processing, but nothing was being shown. So i called hp and they just had me recover windows.
Worked okay for a while, then errors started occuring again, and so i continued trying to re-install windows thinking it may have been a bad install- the computer would crash during installs. So now I have been trying almost anything to fix it. And here I am today, fresh updated windows, no card installed, no extra programs or hardware. The problem is less frequent, but often happens when looking at system files (like when running pc wizard) or firefox. Also i have seen the cpu shoot to 100% when nothing is running at all except background- and stays there.
-It has been recording the dump files, but I don't know how to access them?
-The graphics is onboard shared memory(ati x200). I have checked the RAM using memtest and no errors were found- I checked before i reformatted as well as after.
----
NO, I just copied all the STOP errors from the event manager that i could find.

If you run a SEARCH for .dmp files you will see where they are.
Make note of the path then open the WIZ and browse to or paste in that path.
The WIZ is needed to open these files; Windows itself cannot.
Also you could monitor your Task Manager > Processes
See if you can locate the particular process that spikes the CPU.
Also you might want to monitor your CPU temperature.
Everest Home Edition has a monitor under Computer > Sensor (if your motherboard supports it)
You can find Everest here under Utilities:

i have been trying to see what causes the cpu usage, I have noticed it happens when a program, like firefox and it freezes or crashes. Usually have to restart to get the program to run again and the usage goes back to normal.
Also i have Pcwizard, which is basically the same thing as everest. the temps are ok (for having a stock fan on the case)
Processor Temperature : 46 °C
Mainboard Temperature : 37 °C
Power/Aux Temperature : 117 °C
Hard Disk Temperature : 41 °C

1000008E, {c0000005 in general is either a Graphics card or RAM error; generally hardware.
However you are still only posting the start of this log (they are very long).
When you click in the Log (text) box use Ctrl A to select all then Ctrl C to copy all and Ctrl V to paste all.

i think it is set to minidump. that may be why it only shows the short version. i looked in the advanced and set it to full.
is there a way to find the entire file even though it was on that setting?
