Your friend did not need to install Windows 98 at all, he should have installed XP on to a 'clean' freshly-formatted partition. If it's an upgrade version, the XP setup would have simply asked him to insert the Win98 CD for a few seconds to check it, then put the XP CD back in the drive to continue installing XP.

Apart from anything else, doing a 'clean install' like that is the only way to minimise problems and have a more stable system.

Tell your friend to back up all his own files, boot up with the XP CD in the drive (he'll need to alter the first boot device to 'cd-rom' in the BIOS if not already done so), highlight all the partitions which are on the same physical disk in turn and delete them. He will then have 'unpartitioned space' which he should highlight and choose "Install Windows on selected item". XP will format this space as a single partition and automatically begin installing Windows XP on it.
