Sound Problems!!! Help I've Had No Sound For 8 Months

i am using real player. when i try playing a song of any type i receive an error message saying..... 'cannot open the audio device. another application may be using it.' its not only real player but i have no sound whatsoever, the startup music when xp loads doesn't work either nor nething else. the other day i wnt into control panel, sounds and audio devices and in the volume sub heading it states that there is no audio devices. does this mean i do not have a sound card? i have opened my computer tower and i can see the sound card in its slot.
