Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware or software?

If this is a new problem try a System Restore to a point prior to the problem:

start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Are you certain that this is the genuine XP Notepad?

As a first response you might want to post a HijackThis log for review by our Pros in that section:

Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.

    (Not in this section please).

Please specify what issues you appear to be experiencing along with your log.

What is a Freeman Notepad? Is this some software that you installed? If so uninstall it.

I assume that the freeman notepad is part of windows
I can not take it off because it is part of windows and I can not turn it off I tried.
I guess I will have to re install windows xp.
I do not want to lose everything that is why I am trying to fix the problem.
Can I re install windows without losing my music and my pictures?

XP has a notepad found under start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad

There is no mention of Freeman. Where do you see that?

I suspect that you have some malware running is why I suggest going the HijackThis route.

Anyway to answer your other questions a Repair Install of XP leaves files and settings intact (and as such would not remove malicious software either).

SFC is XP's System File Checker. You go to start Run... and type: sfc /scannow

You will be asked to insert your XP CD. This checks and replaces all XP system files. Again this would not remove malware.

Just another thought: Someone or something created a Notepad document and entitled it Freeman.

If you open Notepad as described above the header box says: Untitled - Notepad

If you see a similar box with the header Freeman - Notepad then this is a specific file that has been saved on your computer.

So what happens when you try to delete it? (Edit > Delete)

If this is so what is in the document? Is it blank?

If this is the right track then there are many ways to try and delete it but we need to know if we are on the right track.

Again if you did not create this than someone or something else did which again recommends a HijackThis log.
