Windows media player 10 not working

    Hi,

this is my first post so :

My windows media player does not work. version 10.
If I try to play any video or audio file it says :
Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
That wouldn't be a problem (cause I use other programs for media) but some sites use wma plug-in for embedded video in firefox, so the result is, firefox crashes.

I can't uninstall, roll back to 9.0, reinstall, nothing !

I think the problem started when I installed my new audigy 2 creative soundblaster card.

do you have on-board sound? if so, take out the new soundcard and try the onboard sound card.. if you don't and you still have the old card, try that.

also, have you tried a system restore? try a restore to before you installed the soundcard and then re-install the drivers... also, you could try downloading wmp 11: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...xp-x86-enu.exe

it is a beta version, i have no problems with it and think its great.

    Hope this helps,
    Mike

First to say thank you for reply Mike.

Yes I did what you suggested, and we have the winner.
After rolling back to my realtek on board audio driver wmp worked fine, when i reinstalled my Creative Audigy Soundblaster 2 nx USB card it crashes, so it must be the card. But I still don't have any clue how to fix it, I have the latest drivers and still wont work, I'll try to see if I can get feedback from creative crew.

    Thanks boogie

try your usb card again, but disable the on-board sound:

Click start rt click on my computer and click properties, go to the hardware tab and click device manager, click the + next to sound, video and game controlers, chose your on-board sound (mine is SoundMAX intergrated digital audio), right click on it and click disable, try again.

This is what I did : uninstall on-board drivers, restart- disable onboard sound in BIOS, installed new card, that should be ok.

So my sound & video controlers tab looks like :

    Audio codecs
    Creativ USB Soundblaster Audigy 2NX
Legacy Audio Drivers (can't disable it with right click)
    Legacy video capture devices
    Media control devices
    Video codecs

Nope, reinstalling firefox doesn't help. Embedded video in I.E. doesn't work.

i would sugest that you try installing flash: http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get...ash_player.exe

and also, try installing WMP 11: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...xp-x86-enu.exe

    Hope this helps

Ok, I've managed to reinstall 10.0 but nothing, rollback to 9.0 nothing, 11.0 doesn't work either so it has to be something with creative drivers. Strangely it seams that I'm the only one with this problem cause creative forums don't have any info about that problem.
I would reinstall windows to try to fix it but I'm afraid it will happen again, since the thing works without creative card installed .It doesn't have anything to do with firefox cause it crashes in stand alone!
    Bugger

so, you say it's USB? do all other USB devices work?

Click start rt click on my computer and click properties, go to the hardware tab and click Device Manager, click the '+' by Universal Serial Bus, do any have exlimation marks? or do they look like this:
