When the problem first started, it wasn't due to any install or removal of software, as I remember.

The error message occurs when I double click a folder in any windows folder window ie. MY documents, or explorer, my computer etc. If I right click and explore (in the left hand pane only) , i can get it not to make a run tme error.

Also the error occurs when I use windows search tool.

System restore was unable to restore back to a previous state, i didnt get the exact error message (one error at a time thanks!) I have searched high and low, and tried several things,

including uninstall google toolbar, reinstall and uninstall again,

    replacement of vb runtime files,

    use of sfc /scannow,

tried selective startup in mscinfig to isolate problem, but no good,

cleaned with virus scanners, avast, avg, ewido, ad aware, and spybot, as per above, done a regclean.

Removed minisearch in hijack - no good.

Posted in virus and malware , and they said try here, so here i am !

I am running out of ideas to try . Help !!!
This error is usually associated with a specific application. Do you see an application listed in the error?

    Also:

Look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for red X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

    Thanks Jephree

I'm not a suscriber on that service, so I cant get into any links with the "real" info.

All those comments seem unrelated to me - how can I figure what applies to me ?

    Whats my next step ???

    Try this little app:

    http://www.snapfiles.com/get/shellexview.html

First off see what items come up red tagged or pink.

Jephree you da man !!! That little program very helpful !

I found the problem was a bho in free download manager, so I uninstalled fdm, and bingo !! Problem solvered.

I gotta say I am impressed with you help , and again many thanks! This is the first time EVER I have used one of these forums to get some help - mostly I have been able (lucky ?) enough to scour and search the net to find a solution - but this time I was stumped. Your help was "life saving". Like many - computer = necessary for work.

Hopefully I wont have to bother you again, but if I do, I know where to come :-)

    Have a fantastic day !

I am very glad that it worked for both of you!

It's a thread like this that makes all the effort here worthwhile.

    Thanks for your reactions!

I just joined DAL because of this thread! I tried every restore and repair (including an associate manually deleting explorer.exe&.scf and copying them off the install disk via command prompt safe mode-not too safe!) I tried the reinstall rebuild no-reformat off the boot disk and finally found the technolectual oasis in the desert. I'm sure you've heard M$ says no action is needed! This IS true unless you want to use explorer. I personally prefer PowerDesk anyways but I really hated not knowing what was going on and was a couple Google results from reformatting and reinstalling. Thanx!!!! You guys are good!
