Need help installing drivers for sound card

I haven't been able to access any sort of sound on my computer for quite a while. I reconfigured my computer and after i reinstalled windows it would not play any sound. When i open up media in WMP it states:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

I ran a belarc advisor to find out what kind of sound card i have and it came up with

    MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device
    Pinnacle PCTV Data Service

i tried downloading drivers for either of those, but to no avail. I'm at my wits end trying to figure out how to fix this...if anyone can help me figure this out it would be amazing. Let me know if u need anymore info about my system to fix the problem. thanx

What is the make and model of your computer?

Have you knowingly installed a PCI Sound Card?

Sorry if my first reply was too brief but if you have not installed a PCI Sound Card then the best source of a driver is the computer manufacturer's web site.

We can help you search if we know the exact make and model of the computer.

If your computer was custom built then the best source is your motherboard's manufacturer so we would need to ID that.

If you have put in your own sound card then we need to ID the make and model of that.

Reinstalling XP often wipes the audio drivers. You just need to find the right one to reinstall.

If you have a driver CD for your computer or motherboard that will do as well.

Open it and look for the Audio Diver.

    Hope this helps.

My computer is an emachines D4362. I also did install a pinnacle pctv card, but i believe it was installed incorrectly. It wasnt a custom built computer so i'm sure it shouldn't be too difficult to fix (unless ur me HA). I'm also running windows xp.

eMachines does not list drivers for that model:

    http://emachines.com/support/product...es&model=D4362

eMachines specs: Sound: AC '97 audio

That is a very common audio chip but it would be best to ID the motherboard.

Please run and post back this scan. Perhaps we can trace the motherboard.

I don't believe that your Audio is run thru that PCTV card. Are there just 2 cable connections?
The green and pink audio wires go elsewhere (motherboard) do they not? Does the PCTV card not work as well?

all that comes out of my pctv card is a port for a phone cord and a port for a cable line. the green and pink ones do go straight to the motherboard. I just removed the pctv card hardware anyways b/c it was not working...if i get this problem fixed i will try and reinstall that, but i'm fairly sure it wasnt the sound card i was needed...here is the info on the scan...

That scan is showing neither an audio nor video device.

If your video is also on-board you may need them too.

    Here are the motherboard drivers:

    ftp://ftp.fic.com.tw/motherboard/dri...ilities_v1.27/

Under Audio I would try one at a time and test. They are .zip files. Are you familiar with working with these?

no i haven't really ever had to use one... do i just download and extract it?

Yes. After extracting you should see a Setup.exe to install.

I do notice that the downloads are quite large.
