Have just got a used pc and I have the dreaded no sound issue. It is a Northgate STAX2571c. Athlon 2500, Foxconn 400m01 motherboard with Realtek AC97 sound on board.
I have tried everything, from checking everything in Device Manager to all connections and drivers. Have updated driver from Realtek but this just took away my Audio Device and now it shows as no Audio device.
I also installed a pci sound card and drivers that I know works, and everthing shows up as present but still no sound.
Any help gratefully received. I'm going slowly crazy!!!
Did you try this on-board Audio driver:

Thanks for the above link. I will try it later and let you know what happens.Originally Posted by jephree
Thank Jephree for the suggestion re the driver from Foxconnchannel.
Have tried this a few times but download stops about half way through saying " Compressed zip folder is invalid or corrupted".
I don't really know what else to try as I can't find this driver anywhere else. Any more suggestions would be welcome.
I just downloaded the first audio on that page without problem. It downloaded and extracted fully.
Hmmm.... If you still cannot get it perhaps I can upload it online.
I HAVE SOUND !!!!! I tried the download from Foxconn yet again and it now works fine and a lot quicker. Must have been a problem on the line somewhere. Thanks ever so much Jephree for your help.
Just a quick question. I have to keep setting the date and time when I switch on as it goes back to Jan 2003 when off.
Am I right in thinking it needs a new CMOS battery? The PC has been un used for about two years until last week.
Glad you can hear again!
You refer to your date and time in XP?
Does your date and time stay consistent in the BIOS Setup? Is it set correctly there?
You are correct that the CMOS battery is responsible for this but they usually last several years and if they go bad usually cause a lot more problems then Time and Date.
The fact that the time resets when you power off indicates that either:
a) Your BIOS time is incorrect and needs to be changed.
b) Your CMOS battery is dead and needs to be changed.
For (a), simply enter setup when you first boot (if you can't see the key
indicated to do this, hit <escape> first) and change the time. If it
continually resets when shut down, then see (b).
For (b), turn off the system and unplug it. Remove the side cover on the
tower, and using a small flashlight locate the CMOS battery on the
motherboard. It should be about the size of a US nickel, roughly 2cm across.
You need to remove this battery and replace it with the same type. These can
usually be found in any store that sells batteries for cameras, watches,
etc. Take it with you and match it up.

Thanks for your advice re the time setting. Yes, it was the BIOS setting. All OK now.
Once again, many thanks for your help.![]()
