Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware or software?

Look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for red X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

The CMOS error is outside of XP therefore either a hardware issue or the BIOS.

If you get this message again what is the verbatim message?

Is this an old computer? Make and model?

My pc is three yrs old with intel celeron processor.
I had a same problem a year ago.
The CMOS error is showing everytime I start the computer.
Can it be a RAM problem?

    Hi there,

Does your date and time reset itself or change everytime you switch on your pc? If it does then it should be your cmos battery. if not then.. try unplugging your computer waiting at least 10 minutes and then switching it on. if then the above symptoms arise replace the cmos battery... what did you do when you had the same problem a year ago? or did it go away?

    Hi,

I had tried replacing the CMOS battery but the problem persists.Last tim my cousin had taken the CPU to the shop and paired it there. Neithr me nor he does have any idea.

Everytime I start the PC I have to change the date & time in setup The PC does not automatically change the time.

Is "CMOS setting wrong" the verbatim BIOS Error message?

It is curious that your problems are both in XP and in the BIOS.

This tends to suggest a hardware failure and many of your Event errors point to your CD drive.

Another idea at this point would be to flash your BIOS. To do this you need to ID your motherboard.

If you do not know it try this little app: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Look under Mainboard for the Manufacturer and Model. The Manufacturer's web site will most likely have BIOS downloads.

    Hi there,

In my opinion this still points to the cmos battery being either dead or not connected properly. Open up your computer and make sure the cmos battery is properly seated and that the contacts are clean. The cmos battery is located on the motherboard and is easy to find as its the only battery on the motherboard.

And yes I agree - maybe you should re-flash your bios as well.

    Regards
    Mathias

A BIOS flash needs to be created on a bootable floppy disk. There is usually a Flash install along with the BIOS.

If you want to provide the link that you are using perhaps we can help decipher the process as they vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
