I have just reformatted my HD and reinstalled XP but when I shut down the PC does not turn off automatically. Can you please tell me what I need to do so that it does shut off.

Also, Outlook Express shows a preview pane of each email and I would like to know how to turn off the preview.

Have you installed SP2? If not please do. start > All Programs > Windows Update.
