The AVG7 Update Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

AVG is your Anti Virus.
Try Task Manager File New Task Run
msconfig | startup
Uncheck everything here and reboot.
You will be warned that you are running in a diagnostic mode ... just click don't show me this again.

completed above. No icons still.

OK ...
sorry if I go too simple here but:
Right click the Desktop and verify that: Arrange Icons By:
Has checked: Show Desktop Icons.

No menu comes up when I right click on desktop

Short of reinstalling XP my only other thought is try to run HijackThis and see if the Pros over there can find anything.
As a first response you might want to post a HijackThis log for review by our Pros in that section:
Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.
(Not in this section please).
Please specify what issues you appear to be experiencing along with your log.
If you cannot access the internet on the affected computer you can always import and export the data via floppies.

thanks, I have to go out tonight but I will attempt that tomorrow. I can access the internet through task manager.
One thing I noticed was :
You only need one anti-virus program as two or more will cause significant problems on your computer.
Could I have this problem? How do i see if I have more than one anti-virus program ?
Thanks again for your help.

Your HijackThis log will show that.
But if you stopped everything in msconfig no programs should be starting save XP.
Thanks for the thanks. Only wish we could have fixed it. Will watch for your log.
That being said (and on second thought) you might want to go back to msconfig and re-enable everything just so that your log will display all the details.
