External Hard drive, instead of C drive

I was asked this a day or so ago.
Can an external Hard drive be used in place of the C drive.
A friend has an old Pc with a low memory C drive, he as fitted an Hard drive and wants to use that to boot from etc.
    Can it be done?

    Hi and welcome to D-A-L

if you remove the hard drive and alter the BIOS to boot from a USB device it should boot as long as all the data needed to run the machine is on there.

if he has a C drive with XP on can't he use the external drive for storing data
