I have just recently formatted my hard-drive via re-installing WinXP using the format option. It worked fine and my computer is now quicker than ever.
I re-installed my broadband dial-up software and drivers using the cd and that went ok but now whenever i go on the internet it freezes.....
Well not straight away.... if i go on a website it is fine unless i open another browser window or i minimize the current one i am viewing. If i minimize the one i am viewing then it just sites there on the taskbarf and does nothing when i click on it, or if i open another browser i cannot switch between them so i minimize one so i can see the other but the i cannot open the other one.
I tried pressing ctrl-alt-del but that wont pop up, i can open 'my computer' and explore the hard-drive etc. but i cannot open any programs, the start menu wont open and i cant shut down the PC so i end up pulling the power plug.
Anyone any ideas how to sort this?
Thanks in advance!
Try a System Restore to a point prior to the problem (the installation of your broadband software):
start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Who is your ISP and what type of connection is it? Is it Dial-up? DSL? Cable?
In many cases unless there is an USB modem involved their software is superfluous and basically just tracking software.
Unfortunately i have turned system restore off to speed up my PC, it only has a 10GB HD so it was slowing my PC down quite abit.Originally Posted by jephree
I installed the broadband modem and software before i wiped the HD and the computer was fine then. It is only since ive wiped the HD that this has become a problem. Could it be something to do with the registry or something that went wrong during wiping and re-installing WinXP, missing files etc.
I await anymore advice and thanks again!
How exactly did you reinstall XP?
If you chose a Clean Installation then it will do its' own formatting (wiping) as seen here:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html
I did non of that what was explained on that website, i simply put in the XP disk and booted up my PC. I choose to format the partition and then XP installed itself!Originally Posted by jephree
I don't know if that gives you much info but that is all i remember doing!
Any other suggestions would be grateful!
Did you reinstall SP2?
Take all critical Windows Update?
If not then you should.
If the problem persists:
Look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.
How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
Yeh i did reinstall SP2.
I'll try and downlopad all critical updates thru windows update, if i can w/o it crashing!
If no luck i will try the event viewer and post back to you, just one thing though.... Ive just looked at event viewer on works PC just so i know where to go and there is thousands of entries!! Do you need me to post them all if there is thousands of errors?
Thanks alot for the help Jephree

All the lines are dated and timed. Of course there will be nothing prior to your last install of XP.
You will probably find many errors repeat as well.
