    Computer keeps resetting

    Hi

PC has been working fine, no problems. Had a power cut (very short) this morning which switched off the PC. On trying to restart the safe mode screen came up with the various start options. Whichever option is chosen the PC tries to load and then resets itself. Choosing the start windows normally or go to last cofiguration the windows loading screen is displayed but as soon as the logo goes the PC is reset.

Any ideas what has happened and how to remedy it would be much appreciated. Will I have to reinstall windows?

    Windows XP SP2
    Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz
    1 GB ram

Assuming that you have your XP CD:

Boot it into the Recovery Console and try FIXBOOT

Went into the recovery console and pressed R to repair but it made no difference.

When I try to boot in safe mode I get a long list of drivers which stops at

    windows\system32\drivers\Mup.sys

After about 20 secs the screen goes blank and the PC resets.

    I see this about Mup.sys:

    1. made sure ACPI, Plug & Play, USB all enabled in BIOS
    2. moved mouse from the ps/2 port to the first USB port
    3. booted using safe mode
    4. waited until it hung at Mup.sys
    5. removed the mouse cable from the USB port
    6. (3 seconds or so pass, the screen went black and safe mode appeared)
    7. restarted system
    8. booted normally into XP Pro

If needed a Repair Install will save your data and programs. Here is a good guide:

Tried a repair install but wouldn't let me do it.

Disabled usb drivers and mouse in BIOS and ran recovery console.

Ran chkdsk and found errors which I repaired.

Rebooted and Pc ran ok! Reenabled drivers and away we go.

    Thanks for your help
