Question Local Area Connection - a network cable is unplugged

    Hi

I've looked through previous postings but they don't quite answer my query as a complete novice with networks and stuff. I'm trying to install a neighbour's broadband but prior to doing this he has had an error saying "Local Area Connection a Network cable is unplugged" - his computer isn't on a network (its only 2 months old). This is beyond my basic knowledge - what does it mean and will it affect my installation of broadband.
He currently accesses the internet via dial up modem.

    Thanks
    J

    Hi and welcome to D-A-L

is the broadband through the phone line, how is the broadband modem connected to the PC

the "Network Cable unpluged" is normaly the ethernet cable that connects the PC's network card with the modem.

    Hi
Thanks for your help. Yes the broadband is through the phone line, the modem is connected to the PC via a USB cable.

There is a filter on the phone socket into which the jack plug goes from the modem, it can't go directly into the wall as its the wrong plug shape. I'm assuming this is correct, my works this way. The only other thing that made me wonder the filter has a socket for both the modem and a phone - does it need both and does this mean that this error would go away?

if the modem is connected through USB, the network cable will be unplugged as it's not using one.

has the modem got an Ethernet socket it's far better than USB see Here

as far as I'm aware the filter connects into the phone socket and has 2 sockets 1 for the modem and the other for the phone
