chkdsk error message when attempting to defragment.

    Running XP Home with SP2.

When I attempt to defragment my C: drive I get the error message..

"Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: PRESARIO (C:). Please run Chkdsk /f."

I click OK and nothing happens. This sequence repeats every time I attempt to defragment. I would be grateful for any help. Thanks.

Have you rebooted the computer? If so does chkdsk run? If so do you still get the same error when attempting a defrag?

I have rebooted several times. I see no signs of chkdsk running, and I still get the same error when attempting to defragment.

See if you can get check disk to run.

    start > run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk /f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot
this will check for & fix any disk errors.

Thanks for your time. I have tried your suggestion.
After typing chkdsk /f I got the following response..

The type of file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

    I chose Y then rebooted.
There was no sign of chkdsk running, and the error message remains when attempting to defrag.

I know this a long time after this problem but I 've had the same problem for months now and have found out that if you have spyware doctor on your pc for some reason it stops you defraging and chkdsk /f check
I've just unloaded spyware doctor and defrag works along with chkdsk /f
hope this helps someone caus it did my head in
