Difference between DVD-R and DVD+R
I recently bought some DVD+Rs because I heard they were better than the DVD-Rs I've read they have two layers or something like that. I have something that is 7.86 GB and a DVD+R is said to hold 8.4GB so I've read how do I do this and how do I create a multisession DVD?
Thanks.

Both DVD+R and DVD-R can be found with dual (double) layer.
Double Layer Media (DVD+R DL) or Dual Layer Media (DVD-R DL)
So you can find both species up to 8.4GB.
As to a more general answer to the difference between the + & - here is some reading:

As to Multisession:

The options here have a lot to do with your DVD burning software.
Hope this helps some

I think my question is simply do I have the right disc to burn up to 8.4 GB? with a DVD+R?
-
If it is a DVD+R DL then yes. The capacity should be clearly labeled on the case. As well as on the DVD face itself. You can always insert the DVD and check the Properties under My Computer. This will also show the capacity.
A DVD+R will only be 4.7GB but a DVD+R DL will be 8.4GB. (As will a DVD-R DL). The + and - have no direct bearing on the disk size. It's the DL that you are looking for with either mode.
Multisession options are just involved if you are not going to burn the whole disk in one session.
Another option is disk spanning software such as:

I only have a dvd+r not a dvd+r dl.
Thank you for all your help and for answering my question.

But I burned a dvd+r with 3.57 gb of stuff on it and left room for some more multisession disc yet for some reason it says it's full and nothing else can be written to it.
what went wrong?
I use Nero.

Were you utilizing a multisession option in Nero? Unless you specify this the disk most likely finalized
itself in order to be used (played). Once this is done on a +R or -R this disk will be closed.
A multisession option would stop the disk from being finalized.

I did select that option but I pretty much get this message:

From that error I would first off suspect that your burner does not support this option.
As you will note both DVD-RW and DVD+RW should not have this issue.
What is the make and model of your DVD drive?
If you don't know off-hand check your Device Manager: Start/Run/ devmgmt.msc
Click the + next to DVD/CD ROM drives.
