    Trouble Booting

My computer has had many problems with it, but now it will not start at all. When I turn it on I first get a screen which gives you the choice to run in safe mode or normally. No matter what I choose I get a screen which says

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentantion or backup utilities. Check your had drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run HKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

    Technical information:

    *** STOP: 0x000000024 (0x001902903,0x823CBCAO,0xC0000102, 0x00000000)
I've gotten this screen before when I was using the computer, but it would not do it when I rebooted the computer. The only thing I had downloaded before this happened was Windows Defender(Beta), from the Microsoft website.

It won't let me pass this screen no matter how many times I restart the computer. How am I supposed to do anything that they want me to if I cannot get passed this screen?

Thank you so much in advance.

Did you try all the options from the Safe Mode menu?

If so then the next step would be to run check disk from the Recovery Console:

Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console

    CHKDSK
    chkdsk drive /p /r
The chkdsk command checks the specified drive and repairs or recovers the drive if the drive requires it.The command also marks any bad sectors and it recovers readable information.

You can use the following options:
/p : Does an exhaustive check of the drive and corrects any errors.
/r : Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.

Note If you specify the /r option, the /p option is implied.

    Thanks for the reply.

Hmm, the only CD I have for Windows is an Upgrade CD. Can I fix the computer by purchasing a new Windows Home Edition Set?

    What type of upgrade CD?

Was XP preinstalled on this computer? If so what is the make and model? Were there no recovery disks?

Of course buying a new version of Windows will fix all software problems but there are other options.

If XP was preinstalled then the manufacturer may have specific recovery options.

You might also be able to load the Recovery Console with the 6 floppy boot disks for XP:

There is also the possibility that this could be a hardware (hard drive) problem.

Do you know the manufacturer of your hard drive?

You will find the major brand diagnostic boot floppies listed here:

I believe I bought the disk a while back for another computer. It's a Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade disk.

Windows XP was preinstalled, my mother bought the computer from Dell a while back. It's a Dell Inspiron B130,Intel celron M. I'm not really sure if there was a recovery disk, she didn't leave anything with me except for the laptop itself and the power cord.

Oh, can I download them onto a CD?

    Thanks again for the reply.

That upgrade CD should get you to the Recovery Console assuming that the version on the computer is Home.

    Boot it.

At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or press 'R' to repair.

Then run chkdsk c /r (Assuming that Windows is on C).

This process takes some time. Just let it run. Perhaps as long as an hour depending on the damage.

Also on further review (if the computer is 2 years old or less):

    Another possibity from Dell:

STEP: Perform a PC Restore of the operating system.

NOTICE: To help prevent further complications, it is important to disconnect the system's modem or network cable before starting the restore process.

To perform a restore of the operating using PC Restore, perform the following steps:

NOTE: Dell PC Restore by Symantec is available on Dimension and Inspiron systems that shipped on or after 7/16/2004 in the Americas and 8/30/2004 in Europe.

    Power the computer on.
When the Dell screen appears press and hold the <Ctrl> key on the keyboard, press the <F11> key, then release them both at the same time.
The Dell PC Restore by Symantec window appears.
NOTE: Press the keys one time only. If you press them more than once, a keyboard error occurs and the process has to be initiated again.

Click the Restore button or press the <Tab> key to highlight Restore and press the <Enter> key.
A caution message appears advising that all data will be lost.
Click the Confirm button or press the <Tab> key to highlight Confirm and press the <Enter> key.
The Progress window appears. Once the process is begun, Dell PC Restore usually takes only 8 to 10 minutes to complete.
When the restore is complete, the message The system recovery process was successful appears.
Click the Finish button or press the <Tab> key to highlight Finish and press the <Enter> key.
    The computer will restart.
Your software is now as it was when you first received your computer.

NOTE: After the Operating System has been restored, it is important to run Windows Update as soon as possible, to bring the system to the latest level of security.
This can be seen in detail by following this path:

    Inspiron B130 (B120)

    Software Reinstall Guides

...then just follow the prompts. This will remove all data from your computer but should restore XP to its' factory condition.

I tried "Symatec Recovery Disk" but it says
No recovery points found in any of the recovery point storage locations in this computer. Please choose another location to search for recovery points
Then it allows you to browse for a folder. My Documents, My Computer, My Network places.

I can't seem to find anything here.

It gives you the option to either

Recover My Computer, Recover My Files, and Recover My Computer to Dell Configuration. None of these seem to work.

When I chose to Recover My Computer to Dell Configuration I got an error message saying
Error EC950025: Cannot find a factory recovery point on this computer
Was I supposed to make a recovery point when I first got this computer?

    Probably: yes.

Try going thru the wizard at Dell:

Microsoft® Windows® XP Reinstall Guide [ All Desktops and Portables ]

Attempts have not been made to avoid a reinstallation.

    http://support.dell.com/support/topi...30030ABD6209A0

The system does not boot into Microsoft® Windows® XP.

This is a step-by-step Troubleshooting Wizard. Use the options below to navigate.

STEP: Run the Drive Short Test from the PSA diagnostics and obtain the error code.

The PSA diagnostics contain the Drive Short Test (DST). To launch the PSA sequence and run the DST, perform the following steps:

Press and hold the <Fn> key, and then press the power button to power the system on.
    Release both buttons.
    The PSA diagnostics sequence begins.
    Follow any on-screen instructions.
Record the sequence of beeps and/or make note of any error codes that may appear.

Also did you try running chkdsk from the Recovery Console from the XP CD?

I ran the "PSA diagnostics sequence". Everything it checked passed the test.

After that it took me to a window that says "Main Menu- Service Tag 4G8WQ91"

I'm now running an Extended Test, it doesn't say how long it will take but I'll inform you when it has completed.

Also, I wasn't able to access the Recovery Console from the XP CD, when I inserted the CD nothing loaded.

    Thanks again for the help.

    Edit: Spelling
