Trouble Booting

    Re: Trouble Booting

If you boot the CD again try typing #2 as in this setup:

    1 - F: MiniNT
    2 - C: Windows

Even if you do not see that try it.

    2 C: Windows then: chkdsk /r

If this does not work there is an outside chance that a Repair Installation might work.

To try this boot the XP CD but DO NOT choose R for Recovery or Repair but when prompted Press any key to Boot the CD and choose Setup XP > Install XP.

There is a good guide here:

    http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

In order to do this you will need your Product Key. It should be on the bottom of your laptop.

    A 25 figure code: ***** | ***** | ***** | ***** | *****

When I tried to install XP it says

Setup annot find a previous version of Windows installed on your computer. To continue, Setup needs to verify that you qualify to use this upgrade product.

Please insert one of the following Wndows product CDs into the CD-ROM drive: Windows XP Home Edition Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 95, or Windows NT Workstation 3.51.
I have the Windows XP Home Edition in the drive, I don't understand why it's giving me this message

Your XP CD is an Upgrade Version. Upgrade versions are sold for less as they presume a previous Windows OS has been purchased.

Apparently this CD does not detect XP on the computer. In order to continue from this point you would need a prior Windows CD. Be it 95 or 98 or ME or 2000 etc.

If you do not have access to any of those disks you could try booting with KNOPPIX and repairing XP via that route.

About the only option left via the Recovery Console would be the following:

    Instructions for KNOPPIX are here:

    http://www.knoppix.org/

Of course you could also try contacting Dell:

I think I may just purchase another XP disk. Thank you for all of your help, I really appreciate it.

Do you know what may have caused this problem in the first place? I've gotten another error message when I restarted my computer a couple of times which said that there was something in the modular bay, or something like that.

If you have a verbatim error message and insert it into Google you will get as much as I will.

something in the modular bay sounds like the CD was in the CD drive.

Creating a KNOPPIX disk will give you access to your data and might offer a recovery route.

It is always a handy tool to have.

There are too many possibilities to speculate on the why this happened.

I recommend always buying your Operating System separate from your computer. That gives you the option to always reinstall it. Many computers that come with Operating Systems fail to mention that one of the first things to do is to create backup disks.

Thanks for your thanks but I'm sorry we could not get further. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice, I'll make sure to remember to do that this time.

It's quite all right, I should be more careful with my computer

Once again Dell might be of some help.

    Or might not.

    Worth a try:

For Technical Support or for Software & Technical questions.

Eh, Dell has never been of much help to me.

I've used their online chat service a couple of times. Not nearly as effective as these forums are.

Sorry but at this point I can think of nothing to add.

It might be interesting to you to try KNOPPIX but if not I guess you need to purchase an Operating System.

Shop around. All Windows should be fairly inexpensive as the market awaits Windows Vista due out in 01 / 07.
