    Blue Screen Wireless Card Error

    Hi all

    I've got a Compaq presario r3000 and most of the time it works fine, although it does tend to go all slow on me, then I get a blue screen error followed by a restart. After this the computer works fine for a while - sometimes a few days or weeks, sometimes a few hours then it does it again.

    When i get it back on, it sends a error report to microsoft which then tells me a driver is malfunctioning/incompatable and that they dont know whats wrong. I know that the problem is my wireless card, although i have changed the card since the error first started, i still get the same error. I really dont want to have to uninstall it as its my only way to get to the internet.

    Any ideas??

    PS. The blue screen doesnt last long, about 1 or 2 seconds, then it restarts.

    Change this setting in order to freeze the blue screen and copy off the data:

    rt. click My Computer then click Properties then Advanced then Startup and Recovery Settings then unclick Automatically restart

    ..................................................

    Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
    Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
    Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
    Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
    Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

    How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

    ..................................................

    If you want to try and analyze the XP errors:

    Go to start | search (type in) .dmp
    Note the location of your .dmp files.

    Then:

    1) Download and install the
    Debugging Tools from Microsoft
    2) Download and install this
    debugwiz
    3) Open the Wiz & Browse to, or paste in the path to, your .dmp file.
    4) After the Wiz creates a Text document attach it back to this thread.

    hi jephree,

    i did as you said and i found 4 different .dmp files so ill post the logs one after another. First is the 7AD83.dmp log:

    Opened log file 'c:\debuglog.txt'

    Microsoft (R) Windows Debugger Version 6.6.0007.5
    Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    Loading Dump File [C:\Documents and Settings\Chris Harris\Local Settings\Temp\7AD83.dmp]
    Could not open dump file [C:\Documents and Settings\Chris Harris\Local Settings\Temp\7AD83.dmp], NTSTATUS 0xC000011E
    "An attempt was made to map a file of size zero with the maximum size specified as zero."

    All the other logs were the exact same. The filenames were 1DD37F.dmp, 177136.dmp and C6651.dmp

    Have i done something wrong here?

    PS. I looked through the events manager and the only errors were programmes that wernt any to do with the crash although there was one entry that stood out "Error", source = System Error. The most recent was:

    Type = Error
    Date = 29.07.2006
    Time = 19:44:09
    Source = System Error
    Catagory = (102)
    Event number = 1003
    User = SYSTEM
    Computer = CHRIS

    This anygood?

    Hi jephree, since i asked this question, my laptop has crashed 3 times...:-(

    Heres the readout from the blue screens:

    #1

    "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to this computer.

    If this is the first time you've seen this screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:

    Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. (I have 10.3GB free on a 74.5GB disk). If a driver is identified in the stop message disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters. (????)

    Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. (Then it goes on about safe mode startup)

    Technical Information:

    *** STOP: 0x000000C2 (0x00000040, 0x000000000, 0x8000000, 0x00000000)

    Beginning dump of physical memory
    Physical memory dump completed"

    NB. When this happened, I was trying to play a .avi file in Windows Media Player 11 Beta - ive had no other problems with the beta at all.

    I know i said this was a wireless card problem, im beginning to think it may have something to do with all the video and audio codecs ive got installed on the computer. Think that may be the problem???

    Sorry I missed an earlier reply. I remember researching NTSTATUS 0xC000011E errors but I guess I never posted back.

    That error plus the next 0x000000C2 need further identifying. Did you download these apps:

    If you want to try and analyze the XP errors:

    Go to start | search (type in) .dmp
    Note the location of your .dmp files.

    The last 2 that you posted 0x0000008E (0xC0000005) from smwdm.sys

    smwdm.sys is indeed your audio driver.

    Are you using the on-board audio device or have you added a PCI card?

    Also what is the make and model of the Network Card?

    Also what Anti-Virus are you using? That one error has a history of faulting Trend Micro PC-Cillin.

    hi again, another crash :-(

    "Technical Information:

    *** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xF7BD5E05, 0xF160824C, 0x00000000)

    For the audio device im using the laptops speakers. Network Card is a Safecom SWLCR-1100 (using product drivers v1.0

    The anti-virus is Bullguard v6.1 - i dont think this is the problem as my dad has it on his computer and he's had no trouble at all with it for the past 3 years.

    I looked at device manager and i saw i had several devices in sound, video and game controllers. These are:

    #1 - Audio codecs - device is working properly
    #2 - Legacy Audio Drivers - device is working properly
    #3 - Legacy Video Capture Devices - device is working properly
    #4 - Media Control Drivers - device is working properly
    #5 - SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio - device is working properly
    #6 - Video Codecs - device is working properly

    Which one should i have a better look at?

    smwdm.sys is part of #5 - SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio .

    I would suggest finding your exact presario r3000 model here:

    http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Looku...x=2&submit.y=7

    You will find the audio drivers for your laptop.

    I would uninstall your current driver then load a new version.

    Ive unistalled it, but couldn't find a replacement for it at the site you posted. However, everything seems to be going well.... it has blue screened me yet and my speakers still work - as do all the codecs and such.

    A related question, it crashed whilst i was uninstalling the Beta Office XP and now i cant install or uninstall either Beta 2007 or XP. I kinda need word so any ideas?

    Sorry to be a pain..

    Beta software should only be used on testing machines.

    That being said I do not quite follow your meaning: i cant install or uninstall either Beta 2007 or XP

    Can you post the verbatim error messages and or describe in detail what happens when you try to install or uninstall. Please also specify which program you are describing.

    Do you have a System Restore point prior to any and all beta software? If so you might try that.

    Of course there is always the choice of restoring XP with your HP recovery media.

    Were you able to ID the exact Presario R3000 model that you have?
