I've recently had major problems with spyware and viruses clogging up my PC, I'm now pretty sure I've cleaned it up as my virus scanner is showing up as all clear and any spy/adware programs I'm using (Hijack this included) are also saying there are no issues but I'm now encountering a new problem. My PC has decided to restart itself after around 30 seconds after logging in and it's sending me round the twist!

After logging on in the normal way, my PC will suddently reboot itself. When I disable the automatic reboot, I get the blue screen of death. I can use my PC in safe mode for the main part without it restarting, although I lose internet connectivity after around 3/4 mins meaning another restart back to safe mode.

The problem first occured when I went to install IE 7 Beta after I'd cleaned up the pc of the infections. During installation it rebooted itself and then the problems started. Although it doesn't restart itself randomly in safe mode, if I try installing IE7 in safe mode then it does reboot itself.

Like I said, it's coming up clean with regard to viruses/spyware but maybe there's still something lurking or it could be entirely unrelated and coincidental that my PC's doing this.

I got so frustrated with it yesterday that I decided to do a repair of XP with the XP CD, I tried to boot from disk at startup, got the message "booting from disk.....OK" and it then continued to boot up Windows in the normal way without going into the XP setup screen. I logged in then 30 seconds later.......blue screen! Am I doing something wrong here?

I'm running XP home with a 1ghz AMD Athalon processor, 512mb ram.

When you boot the XP CD do you get the "Press any key to boot from the CD" prompt?

If so and you still have issues try starting with the 6 floppy boot disks from Microsoft:

Is this a full version XP CD rather than a manufacturers' Recovery Disk?
