whenever i attatch my mp3 player i get the usual "safely remove hardware" icon on my taskbar. But it does not stay there for long, so when i want to remove the player i have to do so just by unplugging. Is there a short cut i can use to remove it safely?

Not sure but my guess is the icon has gone and hidden itself and you're quite ok just unplugging it.

I have never used that feature. I just turn off my mp3 player and close the folder before I unplug it. Same with my digital camera.
