Can't Remove Program

    Can't Remove Program

Someone please help me. I can't seem to be able to remove a program. I installed the software for Java that came with the tutorial: The Complete Java 2 Training Course.

There was a problem so I tried to remove the software and start again but I couldn't remove a 1MB file for Forte for Java, Release 2.0, Community Edition. I have tried to remove it from the Add/Remove programs Utility. It says that it has completed the requested operation but the file remains every time. I've tried the same logged in as administrator in safe mode but file still remains. I have removed all the references to the Sun Microsystems Java software( the other programs that were not a problem...ie the SDK, the plug-in, etc ) from the registry editor(regedit) but the 1MB file still remains.

When I try to reinstall it just asks if I want to remove the software again as when I just try to remove it.

I just got this new Dell Laptop and the tech assistance tells me to do a system recovery but I've already done this twice and it takes all day to reinstall all software and setup the computer to my liking.

There must be somebody that actually knows the command line codes to remove this file so I can reinstall the software to go through this tutorial this summer.

    Thanks in advance,
    Charles Thomas

    Uninstall Programs Manually

Just because Windows XP has the Add/Remove Programs feature it doesn't mean your application will appear in the list. Furthermore, even if it does appear, it's no guarantee that the uninstall feature will work. When you run across one of these situations the items listed below will help in getting rid of the application. Be aware that these steps may not remove everything associated with the application and can impact other applications on the computer. Have a backup or restore point and use caution.

    *

Find the directory for the application and delete all the files in the directory. Delete the directory. e.g. click C: under My Computer then Program Files etc.
    *

Open regedit (start/run regedit) and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.
    *

Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.
    *

To remove the application entry from Add/Remove Programs (if present) open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.
    *

Some applications have Services attached to them. If this is the case, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es, locate and delete the service.
    *

In Windows Explorer, navigate to the individual user settings and delete program references. Common places to check would be:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs and delete relevant entries.
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and delete relevant entries.
C:\Documents and Settings\%YourUserID%\Start Menu\Programs and delete relevant entries.
[Do this for each User ID listed]
C:\Documents and Settings\%YourUserID%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and delete relevant entries.
[Do this for each User ID listed]

If no entries were found in the previous step and the application launches automatically, navigate to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
    and delete the entry.

Thank you so much for your reply to my request for a solution to remove a persistant file in the add/remove program field. I have tried everything you suggested but nothing worked.

I removed all the registries that had anything to do with Sun or Java hoping that the 1MB file would be gone with all the other Java application files. But it remains. I still can't uninstall this file or reinstall the Java program files.

I used the registry cleaners(around 500 flagged and removed) and the registry optimizer(5% reduction) created several backups(hopefully won't need them, I really don't know yet how to recover it if needed) and removed all the registry files to do with Java.

Are you able to locate this 1MB file or are you just seeing it in Add/Remove Programs?

If you can see the file what happens when you try to delete it?

Did you try both of those removal programs that I posted?

I see that Forte for Java, Release 2.0, Community Edition installs in forte4j_user.

    Thank you for answering.
    In answer to your questions:

QUESTION 1: Are you able to locate this 1MB file or are you just seeing it
    in Add/Remove Programs?

    Just in Add/Remove Programs.

QUESTION 2: If you can see the file what happens when you try to delete it?

It asks me if I want to remove the selected application and all of
its components, I select yes, it says maintenance completed but the file
    remains.

This same sequence happens if I try to reinstall.

QUESTION 3: Did you try both of those removal programs that I posted?

Yes. Though, I Haven't tried the external boot app.

QUESTION 4: I see that Forte for Java, Release 2.0, Community Edition
    installs in forte4j_user.

You were right about the forte4j file. According to the information
this is where I should find the uninstaller but I opened it (as well as
all the other files in windows explorer) and can't find anything
    named uninstaller.

I found this in the documentation, but I don't know where it is
located or how to access the uninstaller.

(This direction set for all windows platforms)

    Uninstalling Preceding Forte for Java
    1. Run the uninstall.class located in /forte4j.

    2. Follow the dialog boxes to complete the
    uninstall.

Also, I am familiar with the incompatibility between different OS. Am not
sure if I need to add second backslash as in opening files in C++ in Linux
or need to change forward slash to backslash.

(This is in reference to file path above: /forte4j)

Sorry to be so ignorant, I have just begun to understand the inner workings
of the windows OS (were working in Linux). Were not taught any IT in my CS
program. I'm getting somewhat proficient at program design and
implementation but the knowledge of maintenance operations is slow coming.

    Can you delete forte4j ?

If not what error do you get?

Have you tried deleting forte4j with either:

    http://www.gibinsoft.net/gipoutils/bin/moveonb.exe

    Or:

    http://www.jrtwine.com/Products/DelF...lesInstall.zip

Did you find that program in and delete it in this registry entry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall

  7. #7
    Jephree:

I already had deleted this file from windows explorer and did a search of the C drive to make sure forte4j wasn't anywhere else and the only returned result was the registry entry backup in regseeker.

Yes, I have already removed the file from the registry also. Although I don't know what the registry entry for jasc is for and was apprehensive to delete it.

Am I correct in assuming that when I removed the SDK I accidentally removed the pointer to the address of this forte for Java file and that's why I can't delete it?

Have you reviewed the readme doc I pasted into the last thread? If I read the doc correctly, I have to uninstall this app. with a supplied uninstaller but I don't know where it is.

    Jephree:

I think I may have fixed the problem. I went back and used the JRTwine and search utilities to which you had referred me. I found the last reference to the forte for Java file in the i386 file using the ccleaner utility. I had to specify hidden files and then I deleted it. I went back and looked in the add/remove programs window and it looks like it is gone. I'll let you know if the reinstallation is successful.

    Thanks so much,

    Jephree:

I reinstalled the software and it looks like there is a problem. It says that runide.exe is not a valid command in win32. I think that since this app. needs to have an active internet connection to its companion site which has moved that this is causing the problem.

This is what I found at the site:

This is the old home page for the NetBeans APIs. Please now use platform.netbeans.org!

It then asked me if I wanted to fix the problem or delete and I chose fix but this didn't help.

I had to reinstall all the software to install the forte again since it is dependent. I have left the software on the computer hoping that I can fix this problem.

I removed and reinstalled the software again and I think I was right about the invalid web sight. This time it said:

Setup failed to run installation: The remote procedure call failed.
